Meet Kai

Kai was the most anxious dog in the world. Big things felt far too big. Then a wise dog named Kip taught him a secret: you don't have to do the whole brave thing at once — you only have to take one small step. And then the next.

When a spell starts draining the wag from every dog on earth, the most frightened dog of all is the only one who can put it right. A story about courage that looks quiet, friends who walk beside you, and saying the scary things out loud.

Kai's One Small Step Journal

Eight gentle weeks of small brave steps, with Kai beside you and Kip's wisdom at the foot of every page. Write it or draw it — there's no wrong way.

1

One brave thing

Brave can be tiny. Getting up on a hard day counts.

2

One happy thing

A small moment that made you smile. Joy always counts.

3

The scary bit

Write it, whisper it to Kai, or just tick the pineapple. You never have to.

And every week, a celebration page. Kip, Kai and Mr. Pickles mark how far you've come — with marmite on toast all round.

The pack

Not an old friend — a wise one, who can make sense of just about anything.

Lola

The strongest dog in the world — strong on the outside, and softest of all on the inside.

Molly

A giver through and through — her toys, her treats, even her bed (for Kip, of course).

Action stations — if there is a task to do, she has done it before anyone has even thought of it.

Not a dog. Still essential.

More to come

New friends in every new book.

Each friend will get their own page — a real photo, and what they teach about being brave, finding joy, and never being alone. Kai's is ready; the rest follow as we add them.

Kip & Kai
Our story

Kip & Kai

Kai really was a rescue dog who arrived frightened of everything — and slowly, with a steady old friend at his side, learned to be brave. Kip really was that friend.

They brought joy and love to everyone who met them — and people still talk about them today. Yellow Pineapples was created by Melanie Ross to keep them alive, and to put their gentle courage into the hands of any child who has ever felt scared and been brave anyway.

The mission

Joy, courage & connection — for everyone

Yellow Pineapples exists to feed light and joy into the world, one small step at a time.

  • Helping anxious young hearts feel braver, and less alone
  • Championing rescue dogs and the love they give
  • Bringing children, dogs and grandparents together in joy
  • Stories and tools that are kind, honest, and beautifully made
The adventure continues

More small steps to come

Kai and Kip's story is the first of many — more adventures, more journals, and more of the pack, with more joy on the way.
