Meet the pack

Kip

The wisest dog you'll ever meet

Kip wasn't an old friend — he was a wise one. He could make sense of just about anything, tell the time to the second (especially dinner time), and hold two tennis balls in his mouth at once. And when the most anxious dog in the world arrived, Kip knew exactly what to do: walk beside him.

The Real Kip

A photograph of the real Kip.

Kip was the most intelligent of dogs. He had eyes that could see into your soul with such a knowing. He was wise and calm, but had a naughty side to him too, that only came out on special occasions. He was always a leader. His trick with two tennis balls has gone down in history.

What Kip teaches

Kip's wisdom runs through every page of the book — and every page of Kai's journal.

1

Make sense of it

Big scary things get smaller when someone helps you understand them. That was Kip's gift — turning "too big" into "one thing at a time."

2

One small step

Kip's great secret: you never have to do the whole brave thing at once. Only the next small step. And then the next.

3

Walk beside

You can't take someone's brave steps for them. But you can walk beside them the whole way — and that changes everything.

Kip never told Kai to stop being scared. He just stayed — and staying was the wisest thing of all.
